SATURDAY'S SINGLES : BARRY MANILOW WITH KID CREOLE AND THE COCONUTS and SANTANA

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles, a Birthday edition . First up under our needle is Seattle native keyboardist, singer and songwriter, Greg Rolie, best known for his work in the bands Journey and Santana. Greg was born in 1947 and is celebrating his 76th Birthday today. Happy Birthday Greg ! With him in mind we spin our first single. "Evil Ways" was released on New Year's Day in 1970 on Columbia Records . The song was written by Clarence "Sonny" Henry and originally recorded by jazz percussionist Willie Bobo. Santana's version hails from their self titled debut album and the track reached #59 in Australia, #19 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts, #13 in the Netherlands, and #9 on the Hot 100. It is b/w the instrumental "Waiting" from the same LP.

Our second set of Birthday candles belongs to Brooklyn born singer songwriter and producer Barry Manilow. His 80th Birthday is now, Happy Birthday Barry ! He was born in 1943 and celebrates his 80th. To get his party started we spotlight his 1988 Arista release, "Hey Mambo". The song, from his 12th studio album, Swing Street, sees the singer team up with Kid Creole and the Coconuts. The tune, written by Manilow, Tom Kelly, Bruce Sussman, and Jack Feldman peaked at #90 on the Hot 100. It's flip side is the song, "When October Goes", a single from his 10th studio album, 2:00 AM Paradise Cafe. "When October Goes" reached #85 in the UK and #6 on the Adult Contemporary charts.
