SATURDAY'S SINGLES : JIMMY GILMER AND THE FIREBALLS and THE LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY JOHN WILLIAMS

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles. First up under our needle is "Sugar Shack" by New Mexico based rock band, Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs. The song was written by Keith McCormack, Jimmy Torres, and Fay Voss and then released in 1963 on DOT Records, where it was produced by Norman Petty. It was the title track to their 4th album and reached #1 on the Hot 100 where it stayed for five weeks (October 12 to November 9) , three weeks (October 19 to November 2) on the Cash Box and was the #1 song of 1963. It was originally backed with "My Heart Is Free" but our copy is a reissue, possibly from 1965/67 with "Daisy Petal Pickin'" as it's flip side.

In October of 1977, "Star Wars Theme" / "Cantina Band" by Meco from the Star Wars tribute album, Star Wars And Other Galactic Junk (which we own two copies and have featured on this very page) was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100. Can you believe that? It held the top spot for two weeks and cracked the top 10 in the UK, coming in at #7. Well we don't have the Meco single, but we do have the next best thing, the Star Wars version by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Williams. That single was released in 1977 on 20th Century Records and produced by George Lucas. Our 45 has the "Star Wars (Main Title)" on Side A and "Cantina Band" on Side B.
