SATURDAY'S SINGLES - ROY ORBISON and DEF LEPPARD

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles. First we turn the dials of our way back machine to April 23, 1936 and the birth of Roy Kelton Orbison. The Texas native and singer songwriter known to many as "The Caruso of Rock", would have celebrated his 86th Birthday today, had his life not been cut short on December 6, 1988 by a heart attack. He was 52. We mark the occasion by spinning this 45 of of his hit "Crying". "Crying" was released  July 31, 1961, as the title track to his third studio album on Monument Records. It peaked at #7 in Canada, #6 on the Billboard Country Singles chart and the Cash Box Top 100, #5 on the Hot 100, #3 in South Africa, #2 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and #1 in Belgium, Canada's Country chart, the Netherlands, and the UK and was produced by Fred Foster.  It's B-side is "Candy Man", a song written by Fred Neil and Beverly "Ruby" Ross specifically for Orbison.

Next we crowd back into our time machine and move the lever forward to April 23, 1960 and the birth of Stephen Maynard Clark, best known as the principal songwriter and lead guitarist for the English hard rock band Def Leppard, until his untimely death on January 8, 1991, from alcohol poisoning at age 30. He would have turned 62 today. Steve Clark appeared 4 of the band's albums, including their fourth, Hysteria . One of the singles from that LP is our second single of the day. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" was released in the US on April 16, 1988 on Mercury label and produced by  Robert John "Mutt" Lange. It reached #25 on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart, #22 in Canada, #16 in New Zealand, #8 in Ireland, and #2 on the Hot 100. It's flip side is "Ring of Fire".
