SATURDAY'S SINGLES : RUBY & THE ROMANTICS and BRIAN HYLAND

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles, a birthday edition (well, maybe...) . The "maybe" stems from information available on the internet. Our first selection is the song "Our Day Will Come" by Akron, Ohio-based R&B group, Ruby & the Romantics. The tune, written by Bob Hilliard and Mort Garson, was released February 1963 on the Kapp label and produced by by Allen Stanton. It was the title track to the quintet's debut album and reached #38 in the UK, #19 in Canada, #11 in Australia, and #1 in New Zealand, the Hot R&B Singles chart, and the Hot 100. It's B-side was originally "Moonlight and Music", but our copy on MCA has "Young Wings Can Fly" from their third album, Til Then. The band was comprised of George Lee, Ronald Mosely, Leroy Fann , Ed Roberts, and their front woman Ruby Nash Garnett, who I have also found listed as Ruby Nash Curtis. If she's Garnett, the web claims June 15, 1934 is her Birthday. If she's Curtis, then it's November 12, 1939. So she either turned 88 in June of she's turning 82 today. Well whatever the case, we celebrate her long life. All the other members have since passed away.

Ruby Nash (lead singer)
Ed Roberts (second tenor) – died of cancer on August 15, 1993
George Lee (first tenor) – died of cancer in 1994
Ronald Mosely (baritone) – died on December 3, 2011 at age 72
Leroy Fann (bass) – died of an apparent heart attack in New York in November 1973

Our second Saturday's Singles selection comes to us via New York native, vocalist, and multi instrumentalist, Brian Hyland. He is celebrating his 79th Birthdy today and we hope it's the best. Brian is primarily known for his debut single, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", his biggest hot released in 1960, but today we've got the title track to his 7th studio album, The Joker Went Wild, on Phillips Records. . The song was written by Bobby Russell, arranged by Leon Rusell, and produced by Russell and Snuff Garrett, peaked at #23 in Australia, and #20 on the Hot 100. It's flip side is "I Can Hear The Rain".
