SATURDAY'S SINGLES : RUFUS THOMAS and LOBO

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles. The National Event Calendar tells us it's National Dog Day and that's good enough for our purposes. It's a day started in 2004 to celebrate all the love we have for dogs and to bring awareness to the numbers that still need recuing.  Today we are spinning two canine related songs starting with this one. "Can Your Monkey Do The Dog" by Rufus Thomas was released in 1964 on the Stax label and produced by Jim Stewart, who with his Sister Estelle, founded Stax Records. The song, peaked at #48 on the Hot 100 and  was written by Thomas and Steve Cropper and hails from Rufus' first album Walking the Dog. It's B-side is "I Want To Get Married". Thomas was born March 26, 1917  Cayce, Mississippi. He was a singer-songwriter, dancer, comedian, television host, and disc jockey who dabbled in the musical styles of R&B, funk, and soul. He had several other novelty songs about dogs including "No More Doggin' Around", "The Dog", "Walking the Dog", and "Somebody Stole My Dog". He passed away December 15, 2001, age 84, from heart failure.

The track, written by Lobo and produced by Phil Gernhard, was released March 1971 on the Big Tree label and reached #8 in Australia and on the Cash Box, #6 on the Canadian Singles and Canadian Adult Contemporary charts, and in South Africa, #4 in the UK, and #1 in New Zealand and on the Hot 100. It's parent album is Lobo's debut, Introducing Lobo and it's b/w  "Walk Away From It All". Lobo was born July 31, 1943 in Tallahassee, Florida but grew up in right down the road in Winter Haven. He got his start in 1961 in the band The Rumours, featuring  Gram Parsons, Jim Stafford, and drummer Jon Corneal.
