STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - CLEDUS MAGGARD & THE CITIZEN'S BAND - THE WHITE KNIGHT

Good morning audiophiles and welcome back to the Tuesday edition of Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember actor, director, theatre owner, playwright, singer, song writer, producer, and television writer, Jay Huguely, on what would have been his 81st Birthday. He passed away, rather suddenly,  in 2008, age 68. Born in Kentucky,  Jay joined the debate club in high school, and DJ'ed at local radio stations before finding out he was suited for theatre work. He directed plays in Melbourne, FL, before graduating from American Theatre Wing in New York and then set sail for London, England to enroll at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After a time in England working both in theater and television, Jay returned to the US and started a production company called H&H Productions with producer Bill Hartigan.  Following that venture, he went to work at Leslie Advertising Company. There his commercials won awards. He was hired to write a commercial for CB radios, so he got one and learned the lingo and brought the commercial back to the client. The client hated it, however the president of the advertising company did not. He encouraged Jay to develop the skit into a character and album. That character  became Cledus Maggard & The Citizen's Band and the album was The White Knight. The White Knight was released on Mercury Record in 1976 and peaked at #135 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the Country Albums chart. Two singles were released, the title track (#50 Canada, #19 Hot 100, #8 Canada Country, #1 US Country) and "Kentucky Moonrunner" (#85 Hot 100, #42 US Country). Cledus would record another album, Two More Sides, that same year before retiring the character. Afterwards Jay dived back into television writing for Magnum P.I.,   "B.L. Stryker," "Once a Hero," "Tag Team," "Wolf," "MacGyver," "Airwolf," "Murder, She Wrote," "Quantum Leap," "Silk Stalkings," and "Street Justice. He also dabbled on the cinema side, writing the screenplay for the movie, "Bandit: Bandit's Silver Angel" and directing the Friday The 13th film, Jason Goes to Hell. After retiring from the industry, Jay became involved in the Drama Ministry at the Valencia United Methodist Church, in Valencia California, where he lived out his final days.
