STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - MOSE JONES - BLACKBIRD

Good morning Wednesday warriors and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Our record of choice today is the 3rd LP from Atlanta based Southern Rock band, Mose Jones. The band saw it's formation in 1972 from the ashes of the Florida band, Stonehenge,  with a lineup consisting of  Clay Watkins on keys, Randy Lewis on bass guitar , Bryan Cole on drums, and guitarist Jimmy O'Neill. During the recording of their 1st record, Watkins left, and was replaced by  keyboardist Steve McRay. They took the first part of their name from jazz great Mose Allison, and I've read that Jones came from the name of a family dog or it came from Dylan's Mister Jones. They were the first band to be signed to Al Kooper's label "Sounds of the South" and he produced their first two albums. There, they were bandmates with a fledging group called Lynyrd Skynyrd. Then in 1975 they broke up, only to be reformed the next year by members Randy Lewis and  Steve McRay, plus newcomers Marvin Taylor and Chris Seymour. Their 3rd record and first on a major label, Blackbird was released in 1978 on the RCA Victor label and produced by Tad Bush. The title track is a cover of The Beatles song "Blackbird." They recorded a 4th record on RCA, but for whatever reason, that disc was shelved.  One song off that recording, "Alien" was covered by Atlanta Rhythm Section on their 1981 album, Quinella. In their short lived career Mose Jones toured with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Frank Zappa, Al Kooper, John Mayall, Little Feat, Boz Scaggs, Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Mother’s Finest, Eddie Money, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Dixie Dregs. Sea Level, Santana, Freddie King, Wet Willie, IF, Rory Gallagher, The Raspberries, Molly Hatchet, Stillwater, Marshall Tucker Band, Iggy Pop, Kiki Dee, Charlie Daniels, Hydra, Elephants Memory, Hampton Grease Band, and more. They disbanded again in 1980.

I'll link to a couple of sites for more info on the group.
