STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - SAM COOKE - THE BEST OF SAM COOKE

Good morning, Sunday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember Clarksdale, Mississippi native, and singer songwriter, Sam Cooke (Samuel Cook) on what would have been his 92nd Birthday. He was born in 1931 to parents  Rev. Charles Cook, and his wife, Annie Mae. He was the 5th of 8 children, and one of his Brothers,  L.C., was a member of the doo wop band, Johnny Keyes and the Magnificents. Sam got his start with his siblings in a band called the Singing Children when he was six years old, and when he was 14 became lead singer with the Highway Q.C.'s, where he met Lou Rawls. In 1950 he replaced R. H. Harris as lead singer of the gospel group the Soul Stirrers, and by the end of that decade had found crossover success with  30 U.S. top 40 hits. On December 11, 1964, Cooke was shot and killed by the manager of the Hacienda Motel, in South Central Los Angeles, after forcing his way into the Motel's office, looking for the woman he brought to the establishment with him. Today we remember him through song by listening to his second greatest hits package called The Best Of Sam Cooke. The compilation LP was released in 1962 on the RCA Victor label and was produced by Hugo & Luigi. It peaked at #22 on the Billboard 200 and saw the birth of one single, "Bring It On Home To Me" (#13 Hot 100, #2  Hot R&B Sides), which was originally a B-side for the tune, "Having a Party".
