STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - THE WINTER HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL BAND 1953 - '54 - THE WINTER HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL BAND

Good morning record enthusiasts and welcome back to the Thursday edition of Stuck In The Vinyl Again . According to the National Event Calendar, today is National School Pictures Day, a day created to recognize and celebrate the importance of school photos in our lives. It gives us a chance to break out one of our high school band records and that's what we've done. Our subject of sound is this The Winter Haven High School Band 1953 - '54. It was released by Fidelity Sound in Jacksonville,  and I'm assuming in 1954 or '55 and features Roy V. Wood as musical Director, Dwight Towne as Captain, Ausby Owen as 1st Lt., and Jim Traviss, Ed Bailey, and Kay Glouser as 2nd Lts. The record is a 10" that plays are 33 RPM. Winter Haven, FL is approximately 12 miles from where we live in Lakeland.

From the liner notes :

"The Winter Haven High School Band is one of the most outstanding high school units in the south. It has established a reputation for excellence of performance both as a concert and as a marching organization. It has appeared as a guest performer at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, the Cigar Bowl in Tampa, the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville and the Orange Bowl in Miami. It has been the guest of the Cuban National Tourist Commission in Havana, Cuba for four days during the celebration of the Fiftieth Year of Cuban Independence. It has appeared in numerous Florida cities as a marching or parade unit. The 1954 Band has been on a seven day trip to Washington, D.C. where it represented the State of Florida in the Cherry Blossom Parade there. Director of the Band is Roy V, Wood."
