STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - THE MUSIC PEOPLE - VARIOUS ARTISTS

Good Tuesday morning to you all and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today our record(s) of choice is this three disc compilation, The Music People People. The LP was released in 1971 on the Columbia label and features deep cuts from several blues rock, country rock, jazz fusion,  psychedelic and folk acts of the day. There were several songs and acts I had never heard of before. One such act is Jimmie Spheeris. He was a jazz rock musician who was born in Phenix City, Alabama on November 5, 1949 to parents Janita 'Gypsy' and Andrew Spheeris, who owned and operated a traveling carnival called the Majick Empire. His Father was murdered by  an "belligerent carnival-goer," and his Mother moved him, his Sisters Penelope and Linda, and a brother, Andy to New York. There he met and became friends with Richie Havens who introduced him to Clive Davis and Columbia Records, Jimmie recorded 4 albums for the label before his life was tragically cut short due to a motorcycle accident on July 4, 1984, He was 34. Hours before his death he had finished recording his fifth studio album, Spheeris, and that album finally saw the light of day 16 years later. On that album there is a song entitled, "You Must Be Laughing Somewhere". The tune is based upon the life of another of Spheeris' friends, author  John Kennedy Toole, who is best known for his Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winning novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. Years ago I was watching an episode of Smallville where actress Kristin Kreuk, who plays Lana Lang is reading a book given to her as a Birthday gift by her boyfriend Whitney. That book is A Confederacy of Dunces. Years later I spotted it at an estate sale and bought it for next to nothing. I haven't read it yet bought have fantasized if I ever meet Kristin Kreuk at a comic con type event, I'd get her to sign the book.
