STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - SESSIONS - VARIOUS ARTISTS

Good morning Friday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember Greenridge, Illinois native, pioneering audio engineer, loudspeaker designer, and inventor, James Bullough Lansing, on this, the 74th anniversary of his passing. He was born  James Martini on January 2, 1902 to parents Henry Martini of St. Louis, Missouri, and Grace Erbs Martini of Central City, Illinois. His Father was coal mining engineer and James was the 9th of 14 children. By the time he was 12 years old he built a radio transmitter so powerful it gained attention from the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois, who traced the source of the signal and kindly dismantled it. In 1924 James' Mother died and he moved to Salt Lake City where he met his future Wife, Glenna Peterson, and future business partner, Ken Decker. In 1927 the duo moved to Los Angeles and started the Lansing Manufacturing Company. In 1939 Decker was killed in an airplane crash and the business started to suffer under Lansing's tutelage. Altec Service Corporation bought Lansing Manufacturing Company in 1941 and changed the name to Altec Lansing and James became VP of Engineering. When 1946 rolled around he left Altec and formed  "James B. Lansing Sound, Incorporated" or JBL. After many business and personal problems Lansing committed suicide by hanging on September 29, 1949. He was 47.

With him in mind we spotlight this 1973 JBL Records release, Sessions by various artists. The double LP is basically  a guide to how records are made, using a Hoyt Axton recording session in Capitol's studio as an example, with the finished product placed at the end of side D. We got our copy years ago at the now Legendary J.R.'s Junk Trunk.
