LAYNE STALEY, KURT COBAIN : GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Twenty five years ago today, a troubled man entered his garage with a
shotgun. Three days later his body was found. His death was eventually
ruled as suicide. Nirvana arguably, the biggest band on earth, at the
time, had lost the driving force , behind their music.
Guitarist/vocalist Kurt Cobain, the reluctant rockstar dead at the age
of 27. Songs like, Smells Like Teen Spirit, All Apologies, In Bloom and
Polly, already anthems for a angst ridden generation, became dirges in
a musical funeral procession.
Flash ahead eight years. April 20th, 2002. Police in Seattle
Washington, respond to a family member''s request, on a well-ness check.
Upon arriving, they find Alice In Chains frontman, Layne Staley''s body
lying on his couch surrounded by intravenous drug paraphernalia . He
had been there for two weeks. His death was ruled "accidental" as a
result of a cocaine/heroin overdose. His date of death was determined
to be April 5th. He was 34 years old.
It is not the intention of this author to celebrate the decadent
lifestyles of these tragic figures, but to remember the great music and
memories that we lived through with them.
So if the mood strikes you, maybe you would light a candle
put on your grungiest flannel
Tune that old guitar down
and get ready to rock!
RIP
