Maybe you were wondering...
What does maggot do on the weekend?
Sometimes
alot, sometimes nothing...
This weekend?
Before hauling my beautiful
wife,
Mrs maggot, our two teenage daughters, their two teenage
friends ( only male in the vehicle...how'd I survive?), to celebrate our
eldest's 16th Birthday, attending
a classic car show,
a corn maze and
finishing up the night with pizza at
Jay's Place...I started my
morning by taking a little time to occupy the local version of the Occupy Wall
Street movement,
Occupy
Lakeland.
They met at the Lake Morton Pavillion, a modest group of
about 50 to 80 protesters, (our local paper claims it was 150). There were young
and old, black, white and other, holding signs with a myriad of slogans and
sayings. Most of the signs concerned bank bailouts, corporate greed, tax the
rich, 99% and so on. I was pleased to see that their were no hardcore
socialist/communist/ anti -Semitic messages that have been so pervasive in other
Occupations. The closet thing I found to the socialist/communist vein was a sign,
that featured a spike driven through the word GREED and underneath the things
that fell out were:
Health Security
Wage Fairness
Tax
Fairness
Retirement Security
Energy Security
Enviroment
If
that's not leaning towards the
communist manifesto, then
certainly
FDR's second Bill of
Rights.
Several people spoke, and as is common in these Occupations,
everybody repeated what they said, everybody repeated what they said. Damn you
maggot! Snap out of it! Okay, I'm back. I heard messages against Bank Of America
and McDonalds, conversations about how the Koch Brothers (pronounced Coke) were
stealing democracy with their evil money. One protester dressed as the Dali
Lama, told me someone stole his protest sign.
At one time during the
Occupation, a counter protester with a bullhorn yelled " Capitalism is good. I
love Wall Street. USA is good. Go home. Pay your taxes. Get a job." The police
and the press converged on him. It seems bullhorns weren't allowed.
After
about a hour of speakers and repeaters, it was announced that they were about to
begin their protest after their march to the Bank of America. Being a TEA Party
member myself, attending every Party I could...I always thought that when a
group of protesters meet and speak, then that WAS the protest. But with this
bunch , I guess you Occupy first, then march, then protest, at the evil bank.
They left the area clean and according to their Facebook will Occupy Munn Park,
next Saturday, October 22, 2011.
If I attend, as a citizen observer,
recording the current events of our time, not to provoke or shout down anyone
...what should my sign say?
