SATURDAY'S SINGLES : THE BYRDS and THE ROLLING STONES

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles, a Number Ones edition. First we load up into our time machine pull the levers and set the dials to this very day in 1965, when the #1 song in the land was "Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds. The song was originally written in recorded by Bob Dylan and released  March 22, 1965. The Byrds released their version  April 12, 1965 on Columbia records. It was produced by Terry Melcher and was their debut single and title track to their first album, and it reached #10 in Finland, #2 in Canada, and #1 in Ireland, the UK, the Cash Box, and the Hot 100 charts. It is b/w "I Knew I'd Want You" from the same LP. We met Chris Hillman in 2017 at Gram Parsons Derry Down and got a lot of vinyl signed.

Our next time trip bumps us forward one year to 1966 and the track sitting atop the charts is "Paint It Black" by The Rolling Stones. The tune was written by  Jagger–Richards and produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. It was released May 7, 1966 on London Records from their 6th album Afterlife and peaked at #8 in Belgium, #3 in Finland and on the Ultratop 50, #2 in Austria, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, UK (Disc & Music Echo), and West Germany, and #1 in Canada, the Netherlands, UK (Melody Maker), UK (New Musical Express), UK (Record Retailer), Cash Box, Record World, and the Hot 100. It's flip side is "Stupid Girl" from the same record. I used to have the intro as my ring tone and I will always it fondly remember it as the theme song to the CBS military drama, Tour Of Duty.
