SATURDAY'S SINGLES : THE DRIFTERS and DR. HOOK

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles. First up on our turntable is "Under The Boardwalk" by The Drifters. The tune was written by Kenny Young and Arthur Resnick and released by The Drifters in 1964 on Atlantic label. The Bert Burns produced track landed at #4 on the Hot 100, #5 on the Cash Box, and #1 on the R&B charts. "I Don't Want To Go On Without You" is featured on the B-side. The song has a bit of a backstory, as the night before it was set to be recorded the lead vocalist at the time, Rudy Lewis, died of a suspected heroin overdose. Rather than wait, the group handed over the reins to their other vocalist, Johnny Moore.

Johnny Moore – lead & tenor
Charlie Thomas – lead & tenor
Gene Pearson – baritone
Johnny Terry – bass
Abdul Samad – guitar

Like a lot of bands in that era, The Drifters saw frequent lineup changes. Wikipedia lists 65 members, among them 12 vocalists, including the original Clyde McPhatter, who passed away on this day in 1972. Years of alcohol abuse caused complications of heart, liver, and kidney disease. He was only 39 years old.

It's parent album is Rising (#175 Billboard 200) and it's flipside is "Doin' It", from the same LP.
