Good Monday morning gang (if you believe in such things, especially after a long holiday weekend) and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember Minnesota native, Army Veteran, and jazz pianist and clarinetist, primarily in the genre of ragtime and stride, Butch Thompson (Richard Enos Thompson) on what would have been his 79th Birthday. He was born in 1943 and passed away recently on August 14, 2022, of complications of Alzheimer's. He is best known for his work as house pianist and then Musical Director for Garrison Keillor’s radio show the Prairie Home Companion and as bandleader for the Butch Thompson Trio. Today we have him on one of those records, called Prairie Home Companion. It was released in 1979 on the Minnesota Public Radio label and produced by Thompson and Lynne Cruise, who is also the engineer. On it Butch regales with covers of James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, Spencer Williams, Fats Waller, and more.
