Great ! Monday morning faithful readers and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember Fort Worth, Texas native, singer songwriter, musician, and actor, Roger Miller, on what would have been his 87th Birthday. About a year after he was born , his Father, Jean Miller, passed away, and his Mother, Laudene, sent him and his two Brothers to live with their Uncles in Erick, Oklahoma. There Roger became a farm boy, plowing mules, picking cotton, and composing songs while he worked. He joined the FFA and discovered country music and was heavily influenced by Sheb Wooley, Hank Williams, and Bob Willis. At age 17 he stole a guitar and then turned himself in the next day and to avoid jail, enlisted in the Army. Near the end of his service he joined the "Circle A Wranglers", a military musical group started by Faron Young and met an Army sergeant who was the Brother of Kenneth C. "Jethro" Burns, of Homer & Jethro, who talked him into moving to Nashville after his time was up. And the rest is how we say history. During his 5 decade career, he released 52 singles and 19 studio albums, including two numbers ones and nine Top 10 hits. He was a lifelong smoker and on October 25, 1992, at age 56, succumbed to lung cancer.
Today we have him on this compilation album from Guest Stars Records. The only info I can find on the release year is 'date unknown'. On it we find songs from Miller and other well known country songs of the day such as, George Jones, Dottie West, and Dave Dudley, as well as other maybe lesser known names like Clyde Beavers, Tibby Edwards, and Benny Barnes.
A1 Roger Miller– Who Shot Sam
A2 Clyde Beavers– Cryin' For My Baby
A3 Dave Dudley– Where Do I Go From Here
A4 Tibby Edwards– Fool That I Was
A5 Merle Kilgore– Just Before The Battle
