Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning faithful readers and welcome back to the Sunday edition of Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Today we remember trumpeter turned labor union leader, James Caesar Petrillo (commonly referred to as JC or Jimmy), on this, the 38th anniversary of his passing. He died in 1984, age 92. He was born in Chicago on March 16, 1892. When he was a youth he discovered he had a passion for playing the trumpet, but by the time he was an adult had figured his passion would not feed him, so he got into organizing musicians instead. In 1922 he became President of the Local 10 Chicago Federation of Musicians. Tales of his heavy handled exploits include sending a cable in the 1930s to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, demanding he reprimand the Consul General in Chicago for having the audacity to hire non union bands. Later he became President of the American Federation of Musicians and instituted what became known as the Petrillo Bans, barring union musicians from making recordings until royalties agreements were hammered out with the record companies. His legacy includes the free concerts at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park, several references to him and his Bans in films like The Bells of St. Mary's, Road to Bali, My Favorite Brunette, the musical Sugar, as well as songs and even a reference from Bugs Bunny in Hurdy-Gurdy Hare, where Bugs makes a boatload of cash off a organ grinding monkey and exclaims, , "I sure hope Petrillo doesn't hear about this!" He even performed a piano/trumpet duet of "The Gang's All Here" with former President Harry Truman. One critic called it "possibly the worst rendition ever".
So why am I telling you all of this ? What does if have to do with today's record ? I was looking through our WEIRD SECTION of records that includes advertising, school related, and radio industry efforts and found a handful of Standard School Broadcasts from 1958 and right there on the label it reads : Recorded By Special Permission Of American Federation Of Musicians J.C. Petrillo, President And American Federation Of Television And Radio Artists. So I started looking into him and here we are. Our copy is a Demonstration edition from the 30th Anniversary edition which was in 1958, as the program was started in 1928. The weekly educational radio program was sponsored by the Standard Oil of California and were played in schools and picked up by NBC for syndication. They promoted American history through stories and song. Here is the track listing and credit information for our copy, which has the opposite labels for each side. All our radio industry records came from the now Legendary J.R.'s Junk Trunk.
