While political leaders in the nation's capital are debating the pro's and con's of bringing in large numbers of Muslim refugees from war-torn countries, a federal judge in Portland, Oregon, on Friday sentenced a naturalized-American citizen for his role in an Islamic terrorist plot overseas, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/oregon-resident-sentenced-87-months-p...
The 51-year-old radical Muslim, Reaz Qadir Khan, who lived in Portland, Oregon, was sentenced Friday to at least 7-years in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Michael W. Mosman. The case involved a May 27, 2009, suicide bomb attack at Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) headquarters. The suicide bomber slaughtered 30 people and wounded another 300 victims during his terrorist attack. The Pakistani government claimed in their press statement that the attack was believed to have been carried out as revenge for a security force's offensive against Taliban jihadists in the country's northwestern Swat region. The ISI officers were the leaders of that offensive, according to the report. http://www.dawn.com/news/1189358
Khan, who had entered a guilty plea, admitted he arranged for the delivery of about $2,500 to Maldivian Ali Jaleel, one of the suicide bombers responsible for the attack on Pakistan's spy agency. He also confessed to providing financial assistance to Jaleel’s wives after the bombing, as well as giving them advice on how to avoid capture by the Pakistani police. He provided such assistance knowing that his actions would hinder and prevent the apprehension of Jaleel’s wives and others who may have been co-conspirators in the attack. http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/us-man-jailed-over-pakista...
While many are complaining Khan received a light sentence, law enforcement officials said terms of the plea agreement were recommended by prosecutors and defense attorneys and it concludes a major investigation of Khan and his connection to the deadly suicide bombing. "This is one of those paradoxical cases in which an American citizen who is a Muslim helps in the killing of believers of Islam who serve an agency in a Muslim country," notes John Anthony Mosley, a counterterrorism analyst and former police special operations official. http://www.examiner.com/topic/suicide-bombing ; http://www.examiner.com/article/u-s-jihadist-involved-suicide-bomb-...
