SATURDAY'S SINGLES - BILL BLACK'S COMBO and HANK WILLIAMS

Good morning gang and welcome back to Saturday's Singles, A Birthday edition. First up on our calendar of cake is Memphis native, bassist, and bandleader, Bill Black. He is best known for his early work with The Blue Moon Boys and Elvis Presley, and later for his own Bill Black's Combo. He was born on this day in 1926 and passed away October 21, 1965, age 39, from a brain tumor. He would have celebrated his 96th Birthday today. We honor his legacy with this .... well I'm not sure what it is. It's not a 45 RPM single, because it's a 33. It's a 7" with six songs. It might be considered an EP or a proto type for a maxi single. Anyway it's a mini version of the album, Bill Black's Combo Goes Big Band. That album and this disc were both released in 1964 on Hi Records. The LP reached #139 on the Billboard 200. If any singles were released I cannot find them. The track list for this is :

 A1 T. D.'s Boogie (Woogie T. Dorsey0

A2 Tuxedo Junction (Hawkins, Dash, Johnson)

A3 Canadian Sunset (Heywood, Gimble)

B1 Leap Frog (J. Garland, L. Corday)

B2 In The Mood (J. Garland, A. Razaf )

B3 BSo Rare (Sharpe, Herst )

Bill Black (bass)

Joe Lewis Hall (piano)

Reggie Young (guitar)

Martin Willis (saxophone)

Jerry Arnold (drums)

Our second of candles belongs to Alabama native, guitarist, vocalist, and King Of Country Music, Hank Williams. He was born in 1923 and died January 1, 1953, age 29, from a heart attack. He would have turned 99 years old today. With him in mind, we find ourselves spinning this 45 of "You're Cheatin' Heart" from MGM Records. "You're Cheatin' Heart was originally released in 1953 and landed the number one spot on the hot Country Songs chart. Our copy is part of the Band Of Gold Series, which sees another A Side as it's B-side, namely "Hey Good Lookin'". That tune was released in 1951 and also reached #1. I'm not sure when this one was issued. I can find Japan versions from 1962 and 1978, but the US versions do not seem to have a date.
