Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning Friday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Today we remember Cleveland County, North Carolina native, banjoist, and guitarist, Earl Eugene Scruggs, on what would have been his 99th Birthday. Earl was born January 6, 1924 to parents George Elam Scruggs, a farmer and bookkeeper and Georgia Lula Ruppe. Earl's Father died when he was four years old, leaving his Mother to raise him and his four siblings alone. At age 17 Earl met Bill Monroe and by age 21 was playing in his band where he met Lester Flatt. The two formed the duo Flatt & Scruggs with The Foggy Mountain Boys as their backing band.
Today we have them on this live LP appropriately titled Recorded Live At Vanderbilt University. The record was released in 1964 on the Columbia label and produced by Don Law and Frank Jones. It peaked at #10 on the Top Country Albums survey where it remained on the charts for 23 weeks. Our copy is another one of our 'naked' records, as it lives in our collection without a album cover, but I will post a stock photo so we know what it looks like. Earl passed away March 28, 2012, age 88, from natural causes. His funeral was held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.
