Good Tuesday morning to you faithful readers and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember New Orleans musician, songwriter, arranger and record producer, Allen Toussaint, on what would have been his 82nd Birthday. He died in his hotel room, in 2015, age 77, while on tour in Spain, from a heart attack. His career spanned 11 solo studio albums and a multitude of work for other artists such as, Aaron Neville, Floyd Cramer, Otis Redding, Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Lee Dorsey, The O'Jays, Rufus, The Hues Corporation, The Pointer Sisters, Glen Campbell , Joe Cocker, and Paul Simon, to name a few. It's his work on Paul Simon's There Goes Rhymin' Simon, that is our subject of sound today.
There Goes Rhymin' Simon was released May 5, 1973 on the Columbia label and produced a plethora of artists including Paul Simon, Phil Ramone, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Paul Samwell-Smith, and Roy Halee. It reached #1 in both Spain and Sweden, #2 in America, #3 in Canada, and #4 in the UK and has been certified Platinum in the US. Six of the album's 10 tracks were released as singles as noted * below ;
