STUCK IN THE VINYL AGAIN - TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY - INTRODUCING THE HARDLINE ACCORDING TO TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY

Good morning Wednesday warriors and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again  . Today we celebrate the 61st Birthday of the artist formerly known as Terence Trent D'Arby. He was born Terence Trent Howard on March 15, 1962 in Manhattan to parents Frances Howard, a gospel singer teacher and counselor and Bishop James Benjamin Darby. In addition to being a vocalist, he also plays piano, guitar, bass , keyboards, drums, percussion, banjo, harmonica, organ. As TTD, he released 4 albums, including his debut, which is our subject of sound today. On October 4, 2001, he legally changed his name to Sananda Maitreya, explaining "Terence Trent D'Arby was dead... he watched his suffering as he died a noble death. After intense pain I meditated for a new spirit, a new will, a new identity". The word Sānanda  means 'possessed of happiness', and maitreya translates to 'friendly, kind, loving, benevolent. As Maitreya, he has released another 9 albums.

Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby was released July 13, 1987 on the Columbia label and produced by Martyn Ware, Terence Trent D'Arby, and Howard Gray. It peaked at #5 in Sweden, #4 Austria, Germany, Norway, and on the Billboard 200, #2 in the Netherlands and Norway, and #1 in Australia, Switzerland, the UK, and on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Five singles were released from the eleven track LP ; "If You Let Me Stay" (#68 Hot 100, #7 UK),            " Wishing Well" (#44 Adult Contemporary, #18 West Germany, #14 European Hot 100, France, #13 Belgium, #10 Austria, #9 Australia, #7 Dance Club Songs, #6 South Africa, #5 Switzerland, #4 New Zealand, #1 Canada, Netherlands, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot 100), "Dance Little Sister" (#30 Hot 100, #24 West Germany, #20 UK, #9 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, #7 Dance Club Songs, #5 Belgium, #4 New Zealand, #3 Netherlands), "Sign Your Name" (#4 Hot 100, #2 UK), and "Rain" (Netherlands release only).
