SATURDAY'S SINGLES : BING CROSBY and FREDDIE FENDER

Good morning gang and welcome back to the return of Saturday's Singles. Our first selection comes to us via Tacoma, Washington singer, actor, television producer, television and radio personality and businessman, Bing Crosby (Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby Jr.). He was born May 3, 1903, the 4th of 7 children and over the course of his 6 decade career he released 71 studio albums, 83 compilation albums and 409 singles, but is this 1939 Decca Records release, "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" turning on our table today. The song hails from the Operetta "Naughty MArietta" adn features the track, "Sweethearts" as the B-side. The tune reached #12 on the Hot 100 and see Bing team with Victor Young & His Concert Orchestra. Bing passed away October 14, 1977, 46 years ago today. He died of a massive heart attack, age 74.

Our second selection is by San Benito, Texas native, singer-songwriter and guitarist, Freddy Fender (Baldemar Garza Huerta). He was born June 4, 1937 to parents  Margarita Garza and  Serapio Huerta. He got his start at age 10 with a radio station performance on the Texas station KGBT and is known for Tejano music. He passed away on this day in 2006, age 69 from lung cancer. We honor his legacy by spinning "Vaya con Dios". The track was released in 1976 on DOT Records and was produced by Huey P. Meaux. It peaked at #59 on the Hot 100, #48 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary charts, #41 on the US Adult Contemporary charts, #7 Hot Country Songs, and #1 on the Canadian Country charts. It's parent album is Freddie's 5th studio album and the flip side to this single is "My Happiness" from the same LP. Both of these 45s came from the now Legendary J.R.'s Junk Trunk.
