SATURDAY'S SINGLES : GARY BUCK and SOLOMON BURKE

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles, a Songs I've Never Heard edition. First up is "The Wheel Song" by Canadian Country Music stat, Gary Buck. Gary was born in March of 1940 and enjoyed quite a successful 45 year career in the industry. He was a singer, songwriter, record producer, executive, administrator, and founded both  the Canadian Country Music Association and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, of which he is a member. He passed away in 2003, age 63 from cancer. "The Wheel Song" was released in 1964, on Petal Records, and peaked at #37 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles. The track was produced by Happy Wilson and features, "Suit Of Sorrow", another song I haven't heard before, on the B-side.

Our second selection on Songs I've Never Heard is Solomon Burke's cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary". Solomon Burke was a an American preacher and R&B/Soul innovator who is credited with bringing the two sounds together. He was born March 21st, 1940 and passed away in 2010, age 70. (I just realized our two subjects were born on the exact same dates, uncanny ...) Solomon released the tune "Proud Mary" in 1969 on Bell Records. It reached #45 on the Pop Charts and #15 on the R&B charts. It was the title track to Burke's 9th album on which John Fogerty wrote the liner notes. It's B-side is "What Am I Living For", yet another tune, I've never heard, before last night.
