Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning gang and welcome back to the return of Saturday's Singles, a Birthday edition. On this day in 1925, Suffolk, Virginia native, jazz guitarist, and Army Veteran, Charlie Byrd was born. Together with jazz saxophonist, Stan Getz, they are credited with bringing bossa nova into the mainstream with their 1962 album, Jazz Samba. Today we have them on the first single from that album, "Desafinado". The instrumental track was released in April 1962 on the Verve label and produced by Creed Taylor. It peaked at #15 on the Hot 100, #11 in the UK, and #4 on Billboard's Easy Listening charts. The song won the pair a Grammy that same year for Best Jazz Performance, Soloist or Small Group. It is b/w the "Theme From Dr. Kildare" by Stan Getz. Charlie passed away December 2, 1999, age 74 from lung cancer. (Had he lived today would have been his 98th Birthday). Stan, born February 2, 1927, passed away June 6, 1991, age 64, from liver cancer.

Our second set of Birthday candles belongs to Darby, Florida native and multi instrumentalist and vocalist, David Bellamy of The Bellamy Brothers. He was born September 16, 1950 and is celebrating his 73rd Birthday today. Happy Birthday David ! He is the younger Brother of Howard Bellamy who is also his musical partner. Today we have them on this cassette single, "You'll Never Be Sorry". The tune was released July 1, 1989 on the MCA/ Curb label and produced by Tony Brown. The song reached #14 on the Canadian Country charts and #10 on the Hot Country Songs survey. It was the second single released from their Greatest Hits Volume III record and features "Hillbilly Hell" (#74 Canadian Country, #51 Hot Country Songs) on the flip side. We had the great pleasure of seeing The Bellamy Brothers at The Polk Theatre here in Lakeland on November 19, 2009 when they opened for The Bacon Brothers. We won tickets from our local AM radio morning show, then called Mayhem In The AM, now known as Polk County Live. I'll include a ticket picture as well.
