SATURDAY'S SINGLES : THE GUESS WHO and NEIL YOUNG

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles. Today our way back machine takes us back to this day in 1970 when Canadian rockers, The Guess Who,  had the #1 song in America with "American Woman". The song, the title track from their sixth studio album,  was released on the RCA Victor label and produced by Jack Richardson. It also reached #1 in Canada and on the Cash Box charts. It has been certified Gold. Although originally paired with "No Sugar Tonight" as it's B-side, our copy has two songs on the flip side, the instrumental "969 (The Oldest Man), (misspelled as The Oldet Man on our label) and "When Friends Fall Out". Speaking of labels, someone, I'm assuming the original owner wrote, " Colmbra 17th September # 1970, Nelson J. Miguel" on the A side ...

Our second single is by another Canadian. "Heart Of Gold" , on the Reprise label, by Neil Young topped the Hot 100 on this day in 1972. It is his only US #1 and hails from his fourth studio album,  Harvest. The Gold certified song also hit #1 in Canada. It was produced by Young and Elliot Mazer. The tune features backup vocals from James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt and features a double A side with "Old Man" as it's B-side, as part of the Back to Back Hits series.
