Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning Sunday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Last Tuesday (10/11/22) brought us the sad news that Dame Angela Lansbury had passed away 5 days before her 97th Birthday. The Irish-British and American actress whose career spanned 8 decades was known for several roles across stage, film, and television including 12 seasons as the lovable mystery writing sleuth, J.B. Fletcher, on Murder, She Wrote. She was one of the last members of the Golden Age of Hollywood and has the accolades to go along with it, including six Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, a Laurence Olivier Award, an Academy Honorary Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award,a Star on the Walk Of Fame, as well as being appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). But long before all that she starred in the 1966 musical Mame, and that is our focus today.
Mame ( A New Musical) opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on May 24, 1966. It was based on the 1955 novel Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis, as well as the 1956 Broadway play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee, with lyrics by Jerry Herman. It stars Lansbury as Mame Dennis, with Bea Arthur, as her best girl, Vera Charles and 11 year old Frankie Michaels as her nephew, Young Patrick, who Mame Dennis has been entrusted to raise after the death of her Brother. Our copy belonged to my beautiful Wife, Lynn's Mother, who was fortunate enough to see the show and instilled in her daughter a love for all things Angela Lansbury. (Thanks Mom.)
After it's initial run in Winter Garden, the production moved to Broadway and ran until January 3, 1970, for a total of 1,508 performances and five previews. Here's a look at the score :
