Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning Sunday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Today we remember Alabama native, disc jockey, and record store owner, Jimmy Staggs, on this, the 15th year anniversary of his passing. He was born October 7, 1935 in Bessemer, Alabama and passed away in 2007 in Lake Forest, Illinois, age 72, from esophageal cancer. Jimmy got his start in radio at WYDE AM in Birmingham. After that it was on to Philadelphia on WIBG, then KYA in San Francisco, WOKY in Milwaukee , Cleveland's KYW, before ending up at Chicago's Voice Of Labor WCFL. He garnered the coveted afternoon drive slot and introduced the "Stagg Line" as the call in number for the studio and "Stagg's Starbeat", a series of interviews with local, national and international musicians, including Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, the Supremes, The Monkees, and Simon & Garfunkel. In 1964 he was one of the handful of reporters to travel with the Beatles in their private plane during their US tour. Later as music director he authorized the station to play the the controversial "Ballad of John and Yoko" and after that became program director. He was a straight forward rock n roll guy and didn't like the flashy theatrics used by other on air personalities, making themselves the stories. Instead he believed the music was the focus. His sign off line was : "Music is my business. I hope my business was your pleasure."
So why am I telling you all this ? Well, to introduce today's record, of course. that record is this one : Big 10 Winter Gold, by various artists was released in 1969 by WCFL and features tunes from Tommy James & The Shondells, Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, The Amboy Dukes, The Turtles, Deep Purple, J. Frank Wilson, and more. The songs span the years from 1959 -1969.
We got our copy from Maya Books And Music in Sanford, Florida in 2016. We had won tickets from our local morning show, Mayhem In The AM (now Polk County Live ) to see a band called Black In The Mind, which featured Billy Floyd, now of the KitchenKillaz. We booked a room and made a weekend out of it. A great time was had by all.
