Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning Wednesday warriors and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. On February 29, 1904, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania native jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and big band leader, Jimmy Dorsey was born. I had originally intended to feature a album called A Tribute To The Fabulous Dorseys by Fontanna And His Orchestra, but when I pulled the record out of it's cover, it was Marvelous Miller Moods by Glenn Miller And The Army Air Force Band, instead. What's the old saying ? Man makes plans, God laughs.
Well fortunately for me and the page, big band founder, owner, conductor, composer, arranger, and trombone player, Glenn Miller (Alton Glen Miller) was born March 1, 1904 in Clarinda, Iowa to parents Mattie Lou (née Cavender) Miller and Lewis Elmer Miller. In high school he added another N to his name, became interested in dance, joined the orchestra and formed a band that kept him from walking across the stage to receive his diploma. His Mother received the diploma while he was playing a gig. In 1942, during his career peak he joined the armed forces and met with officials of the Army Bureau of Public Relations and Army Air Forces to express his interest in “streamlining modern military music” and the next year he was assigned to the headquarters of the AAF Technical Training Command, where he became director of bands for the AAFTTC. On December 15, 1944, Miller's plane, a single-engine UC-64 Norseman, disappeared while flying over the English Channel . He was in the area to entertain the troops. His remains, nor those of the pilot, or the plane have ever been recovered. He was 40 years old.
Today we spin the aforementioned Marvelous Miller Moods. The LP was released 1957 on the RCA Victor label and reached #16 on the Billboard 200. I'll enclose a picture of the Dorseys Tribute cover as well as a stock photo of the Miller cover so we know what it's looks like .
