Good Tuesday morning to you all and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Today we remember South Carolina native, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and composer, Papa John Phillips, best known for his work in the folk vocal quartet The Mamas & The Papas, on what would have been his 87th Birthday. He was born in 1935 and passed away March 18, 2001, age 65, from heart failure. To honor his legacy, we find ourselves spinning their 1972 Dunhill Records live album, the Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival. The festival was planned by John Phillips, record producer Lou Adler, Alan Pariser and publicist Derek Taylor. It was held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, Monterey, California on June 16 to 18, nd featured acts like The Association, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Simon & Garfunkel, Canned Heat, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Butterfield Blues Band, The Electric Flag, Steve Miller Band, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Buffalo Springfield, The Who, the Grateful Dead, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and The Mamas &The Papas, who closed out the show, This record details their performance only.
