Good morning Monday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again . Today we remember gospel singer, songwriter, and music promoter, J. D. Sumner, on this, the 22nd anniversary of his death. The Lakeland, Florida native passed away in 1998, age 73, from a heart attack three days before his 74th Birthday. Throughout his career Sumner performed with several different vocal quartets, including Sunny South Quartet and Dixie Lily Harmoneers, the Sunshine Boys, the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, The Stamps Quartet, and a supergroup of sorts The Masters V, which consisted of Sumner, Hovie Lister (The Statesman Quartet), Rosie Rozell (Rosie Rozell and the Searchers), James Blackwood (Blackwood Brothers), and Jake Hess (The Imperials). It's the self titled debut of The Masters V that is our subject of focus today. The Masters V was released in 1981 on the Skylite label and produced by Joel Gentry. Our copy is autographed by 4 of the 5 pictured on the cover, that being Sumner, Blackwood, Hess, and Lister. Rosie Rozell had left the group by the time of this signing, but his replacement Steve Warren autographed it in his place.
