SATURDAY'S SINGLES : THE BEACH BOYS and VAN HALEN

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles, a Birthday edition. First up and in line to blow out the cake candles is multi instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and founding member, Brian Wilson, of The Beach Boys is celebrating his 78th Birthday today. Happy Birthday Brian ! With him in mind, we spotlight the boys from Hawthorne, California, with their 1986 Capitol Records release,  "California Dreamin'". The single, from their Made In The U.S.A. compilation album,  reached #57 on the Hot 100 and #8 on the Adult Contemporary charts. The song, written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips, and first recorded by Barry McGuire, was produced by  Terry Melcher features "Lady Liberty" as it's B-side, a track originally titled "Lady Lynda" from their 23rd studio album, L.A. This Beach Boys version is referenced in the Dead Milkmen song, "Punk Rock Girl".

Our second Birthday cake goes to multi instrumentalist, singer, entrepreneur, and founding member of  Pasadena, California based hard rock band, Van Halen. Former bassist Michael Anthony turns 66 years old today. Happy Birthday Michael ! To commemorate the date, we spotlight "Oh, Pretty Woman". The song, a cover of  Roy Orbison's 1964 hit, was released in 1982 on the Warner Brothers label and produced by Ted Templeman. It  peaked at #12 on the Hot 100, #10 on the Cash Box, and #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts and hailed from the Diver Down record. It's flip side "Happy Trails", a cover of the old Roy Rogers/Dale Evans song, is also from Diver Down.
