"Maggie May" by Rod Stewart was released July 1971 on Mercury Records. The song, written by Rod and Martin Quittenton, and then produced by Stewart, hailed from his 3rd album, Every Picture Tells a Story. It reached #11 in Germany, #5 in Switzerland, #3 on the Dutch Top 40, in the Netherlands, and in New Zealand, #2 in Ireland, and #1 in Australia, Canada, the UK, the Cash Box, and the Hot 100. It's B-side is "Reason to Believe", from the same LP.
