Dark Clouds Rain Down Tears Washing Away Swirling Colors From The Clown's Face..
Good morning Sunday people and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. On this day in 1970 the first ever San Diego Comic-Con International opened at the U.S. Grant Hotel. Now, we don't have a album from that convention or any other one. What we do have is this 1966 Columbia Masterworks release, It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman. It's a musical comedy composed by Charles Strouse, with lyrics by Lee Adams and book by David Newman and Robert Benton. The shows original Broadway run did not catch on and was abruptly ended in 3 and a half months. At the time it was Broadway's biggest flop. The production opened this month in 1966 and starred Bob Holiday as Superman/Clark Kent, Patricia Marand as Lois Lane, Michael O'Sullivan as the main villain, Dr. Abner Sedgwick, and Jack Cassidy (Father of David and Shaun) as Max Mencken, as a romantic detractor who desires Lois and resents Superman. Our copy of the Original Broadway Cast Recording is a Radio Station Promo, Not For Resale. The back of the album is a mock up of a Daily Planet newspaper that talks of the events of the play and the players.
Here's a nice link that delves deeper into the plot :
